Motor Vehicle Registration

The Hudson Town Clerk's Office offers the following motor vehicle services:

  • Standard Plates
  • Vanity Plates, Moose Plates, Agriculture/Farm/Tractor Plates
  • Register vehicles up to 26,000 lbs.
  • Late renewals up to 12 months late
  • Duplicate registrations
  • Lease transfers
  • Transfer 4-digit passenger plates
  • Transfer 3-digit commercial plates
  • Boat registrations (additional $5 fee)

20 day temporary plates must be obtained from the NH Division of Motor Vehicles with proper ID and a bill of sale/proof of purchase.  All transactions require proof of residency and/or identification.

Pay Registration

We encourage residents to pay their bill online, via mail, drop box located outside the Hudson Town Hall or by visiting us in the Town Clerk’s office.

We accept cash, checks, American Express, Discover, Master Card and Visa (with a non-refundable $2.95 charge for any transaction total of $100.00 or less or a non-refundable service fee of 2.95% of your total balance over $100.00, whichever is smaller).

New Purchases

For vehicles with a model year of 2000 or newer, you will need to present:

  • Current drivers license
  • Blue copy of the title application prepared by a NH dealer
  • Certificate of origin (new vehicles)
  • Original title OR

*If bringing in the Certificate of Origin or Original Title and there are more than one owners of the vehicle, BOTH owners must be present to register/title the vehicle.

For vehicles with a model year of 1999 or older, you will need to present:

  • Current drivers license
  • Bill of sale
  • Previous owner's registration OR
  • Title signed over to you OR
  • VIN Verification Form 19A filled out by an inspection station or police officer (available at the Town Clerk’s Office, on the NH DMV website under Forms/Title or on this website, Town Clerk/Tax Collector under Forms)

 


Renewals

If your vehicle was previously registered in Hudson, you will be mailed a renewal notice the month prior to your renewal month. If you renew in person, you will need to present:

  • Current drivers license
  • Current registration OR
  • Copy of the renewal notice that was mailed to you

*All vehicles weighing over 26,000 lbs, you must complete the town portion first and then proceed to a state motor vehicle substation to complete the state portion.

 


Transfer Plates/Registrations

A transfer registration is when you have taken a plated vehicle off the road and would like to transfer the same plates from that vehicle to a new vehicle. To do so, you will need the current original registration from the vehicle that you are transferring from along with the appropriate paperwork for the new vehicle (you do not need to bring the plates). If you do not have the original registration, a certified copy can be purchased for an additional fee of $17.50.

To complete the transfer at the Town Clerk's Office, the new vehicle must be in the same name as the previous vehicle registration being transferred.

 


New Residents Relocating from within New Hampshire

Please bring the following:

  • Current drivers license
  • Your current NH registration
  • Proof of Hudson residency
  • Identification

Your registration will be verified with the state then entered and processed.

 


New Residents Relocating from Out-of-State

Proof of residency is required, you will need to present:

  • Current drivers license
  • Current mileage on your vehicle
  • A utility bill OR
  • Lease agreement OR
  • Closing papers for new home OR
  • A notarized statement from the property owner stating you are living at that address.

To register your vehicle you will need to provide the original title for vehicles model year 2000 or newer or your out-of-state registration for vehicles model year 1999 or older.

*If there are more than one owners of the vehicle, BOTH owners must be present to register/title the vehicle if relocating from out-of-state.

If you have an out of state lien holder: 

You will still need to bring in your current out-of-state registration for your vehicle, along with the lien holder’s name and address. We will prepare a NH title application and process plates and registration at the same time.

The NH Title Bureau will still request your original title from your lien holder. However, if the State does not receive your out-of-state title by your registration renewal date, then you will be unable to renew that registration until the title has been received.

NH License Deadline

If you have just moved to New Hampshire, you have 60 days to apply for a state Driver's License (RSA 263:35). If you do not apply for a New Hampshire Driver's License within 60 days, you will not be allowed to renew your vehicle registration or register any other vehicles.
